Frequently Asked Questions about the Analysis of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF)
How is pyrolysis oil different from fossil crude oils, and what are the types of pyrolysis oils?
- Plastics / plastic waste, such as end-of-life tires or plastic packaging
- Biomass, such as wood processing waste
Can ASG support with other services in the field of pyrolysis oil in addition to analytics?
Yes, in addition to analytics, ASG also has the option of fractionating pyrolysis oils or other regenerative streams by distillation. In addition to classic rectification, thin-film evaporators, short-path evaporators, rotary evaporators, as well as continuous systems and batch plants are available. The plants can also be operated in a vacuum for temperature-saving distillation. In addition to thermal processes, ASG also offers syntheses and reactions, for example individual substances obtained from raw materials. We can also help you in the field of centrifugation, filtration or adsorption. For the well-founded experimental support of new process steps, ASG supports you in the in-house Miniplant LAB for process development.
Can ASG also analyze plastic process oil waste according to ASTM D8519?
Yes, the ASTM D8519 standard uses GC-VUV for the quantification of aromatics, olefins, paraffins and styrene in plastic process oil waste and is available from ASG. For more detailed technical information on standard-compliant implementation, please refer to our detailed article on the new ASTM D8519 in the News section.
Why is high-temperature distillation (ASTM D7169) methodologically useful as a preliminary test for ASTM D8519?
The methodology of ASTM D8519 is only applicable to specific plastic pyrolysis oil fractions that additionally have a final boiling point below 545 °C. High-temperature simulated distillation (HT-SimDist) according to ASTM D7169 is therefore used beforehand to determine the matrix’s boiling point distribution. If the determined heavy ends content exceeds the defined tolerance limit, the sample must be physically fractionated. To enable at least partial analysis of such samples, ASG will gladly support you with a real distillation in our pilot plant.
The analysis using GCxGC (ASG 2253 or ASG 2502) provides additional methods. You can find more information in the Special Analytics section or upon request.
